At its regular meeting on 25th June, The Lord Roborough Lodge No 5789 celebrated its 75th Anniversary of Consecration.
The meeting was attended by 81 brethren including the Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro Ian Kingsbury, VW Bro N. Ball DPGM and all 4 AsstPGM’s and RW Bro R.O. Osborn Past PGM. Also present were a number of Grand, and Active Provincial Grand, Officers, members of The Lord Roborough Lodge and a great many guests including brethren from Sister lodges and our Mother lodge, Sincerity No 189.
After opening the Lodge the Worshipful Master, W Bro Brian Pullen, welcomed all of the guests. He then invited W Bro John Sevieri, PPrSGW, to read the minutes of the Consecration Meeting held on 20th June 1939 at Sincerity Masonic Hall, The Hoe, Plymouth.
The Consecration Minutes were followed by a presentation entitled “A look back over the 75 years of The Lord Roborough Lodge No 5789”. This illustrated presentation was devised and produced by W Bro Chris Banbury, PPrJGW. He was assisted in the presentation by his brother, W Bro Tony Banbury, PAGDC, ProvGMentor. It ranged over the history of the Lodge, the times through which it has passed; especially its difficult early years during the 2nd World War when it survived the blitz and the loss of some of its members.
It focused on notable brethren, particularly the Founders and the first Officers many of who are still fondly remembered by some of our present senior members. Notable dates and events were also recorded including the fact that the Lodge has moved twice in its life and that it has raised considerable amounts for charities, both masonic and non-masonic. There was much humour interspersed with the bare bones of history. It was noted from the minutes for instance that the Lodge “approved of the engagement of (W) Bro Clifford Heard to Ann because he met her at a Lodge Ladies Festival!!!!” The presentation was received with applause and with thanks from the Worshipful Master.
There followed an oration by W Bro Graham Lea, ProvAsstGChaplain. W Bro Lea expertly blended history with Masonic philosophies and principals to reflect the life of the Lodge over its 75 year history. He concluded with a prayer or re-dedication, inviting the W Master to place both hands on the VSL during the prayer to represent the Brethren’s acknowledgement of the re-dedication. The ProvAsstGChaplain then pronounced the Patriarchal Benediction to seal the re-dedication.
Two members of the Provincial Executive then took the floor to make presentations.
W Bro Colin Gale, Assistant Provincial Grand Master, presented Grand Lodge Certificates to Bro Robert Craig Williams and Bro Andrew Timothy Horton. W Bro Gale gave an excellent and full explanation of the certificates which he cleverly integrated into a potted history of the Craft. Bros Williams and Horton duly completed their certificates by signing them at the Secretary’s table and showing them to the W Master and the Provincial Grand Master. Assistant Provincial Grand Master, W Bro Peter Keaty then presented a Masonic Bible to Bro Andrew Horton on behalf of his Proposer, Seconder and other Masonic friends.
The Lodge was then closed in due form after which photographs were taken. The Brethren then retired to the Refectory and carried on the celebrations by partaking of an excellent festive buffet. The Provincial Grand Master spoke warmly of the Lodge, its traditions and strengths and the example it sets. He wished us all well for the next 75 years and beyond. An excellent and thoroughly enjoyable celebration of the Lodge’s 75 years.
